Food, Wine and Brew Festival 2024!

It was HOT! Really hot, but that didn't stop the crowds this past Saturday from stopping in and visiting with nearly 80 vendors, hearing some live music, and drinking some ice cold beer! Wine and beer enthusiasts strolled through the park, visiting vendor booths and tasting a variety of local brews and wines. The festival, organized by the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce, has been putting on the event for 16 years, adapting and growing to make this year's event one of the largest. This year’s event was free for everyone, aside from an optional $25 parking fee that went to charity. Harker Heights Mayor Michael Blomquist kicked the event off by tapping two ceremonial firkins, and a toast and music by the 1st Calvary division band. VIP guests were treated to mixology classes by Gambit Social House, a food pairing by Southern Roots Brewing, and a pottery demonstration.

In addition to great drinks, the festival concluded with live music from Austin-based cover band LC Rocks, who had the crowd rocking to hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s.

On a serene day in May, the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with HEB, hosted a poignant event that brought the community together to honor and remember our fallen soldiers. The Wear Blue in May event, held at the picturesque Harker Heights Community Park, was a heartfelt tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The park was adorned with the color blue and photos of fallen soldiers, creating a tranquil yet somber atmosphere that set the tone for the day's activities. As families and friends gathered, the sense of community and shared purpose was palpable. The event featured a variety of activities designed to pay tribute to the fallen, while also providing a space for reflection and unity.

Participants were encouraged to wear blue, symbolizing their support and remembrance. The sea of blue attire was a moving sight, demonstrating the community's solidarity and collective respect for the soldiers who have laid down their lives in service to the nation.

The event commenced with a solemn opening ceremony, where local dignitaries and military representatives shared words of remembrance and gratitude. One of the event's highlights was a memorial walk/run around the park. Participants walked together in silence, reflecting on the sacrifices made by service members. HEB, a key supporter of the event, provided refreshments and snacks for all attendees. Their involvement underscored the importance of community support in times of remembrance and reflection. The local grocery chain's commitment to the community was evident through their generous contributions and active participation in the day's activities.

In addition to the memorial walk/run, there was the circle of honor where attendees one by one mentioned fallen soldiers by name serving as a lasting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have served.

As the event drew to a close, a moment of silence was observed, allowing attendees to pay their final respects in quiet contemplation. The day ended with a renewed sense of unity and purpose, as the community pledged to continue honoring and supporting the families of fallen soldiers.

The day finally came, the ribbon cutting for Gambit Social House, April 12th 2024!

To say this business has been highly anticipated is gross understatement, our area has wanted, has desired, has needed a place like this for adults.

Walking into the building your eyes are met first with the huge beer wall, a pay as you go beer-on-tap self-service beverage spectacle, and then the sound of axes thumping against wooden targets hits your ears.

“Our venue is an adult entertainment venue” Nick Bell, Co-owner told me “but not a typical adult entertainment venue. We know that in this area there has been a real lack of fun things to do for adults. There are quite a few entertainment venues for kids, places like Chuck e Cheese and Urban air, but there hasn't really been any place for adults to come, have a drink, maybe throw some axes or run an escape room.”

After a series of welcoming remarks and gifts given to Nick and the other co-owners from several Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce members and Harker Heights Mayor Michael Blomquist, the social hour at the Gambit Social House officially kicked off. Dozens of guests toured the beer wall, threw axes and socialized over a cocktail or two around a beautiful wooden bar.

The Gambit Social House is family friendly until 8pm, afterwards anyone under 18 will be turned away Nick said. “We check ID’s at the door. We’re just trying to create a place where adults can come and chill out after work.”

VFW Post 3892 Harker Heights Mural

It was a beautiful spring day as the volunteers with The Mission Continues helped spruce up VFW Post 3892 in Harker Heights.

It was a beautiful spring day as the volunteers with The Mission Continues helped spruce up VFW 3892. The team of volunteers took on tasks like sweeping, mopping, and buffing the floor to help ready the building for the upcoming spring and summer events, including the solar eclipse and a summer concert series..

While some put in the sweat-equity to sweep, pick up trash, and mop, others took to the task of painting a patriotic mural on a building in the lower half of the VFW property.

Working closely with Perry Draper, owner of The Art & More store in Killeen, VFW 3892 Commander Warren Close developed a patriotic mural depicting the deep history of military service of our area. After the mural was chosen Perry volunteered his time to sketch the mural on the stone building, and The Mission Continues volunteers finished the job with paint, also donated by his store.

Local platoon leader Juanita Myers, said that they always need volunteers, and specifically would like to see more veteran volunteers to help give back to our community.
